Discover Fall in Homer: A Season of Vibrant Colors and Cozy Adventures

Fall in Homer sneaks up on you. One week the fireweed is still pink, and then almost overnight the hillsides go gold, the crowds disappear, and the town exhales. If you want Homer at its most atmospheric — unhurried, beautiful, and genuinely local — come in September or October.

What to do this fall

Get outside while the light is golden

Fall light in Homer is something photographers travel for. The low angle of the sun against the mountains and the bay creates a warmth that summer never quite achieves. Take a scenic drive along East End Road or up Skyline Drive for views that will stop you in your tracks — pull over often.

For hikers, Diamond Creek Trail and Eveline State Recreation Area are both spectacular in fall foliage. Bring a bucket for blueberry picking along the way — the hillsides are loaded in September and it's one of those quintessentially Alaskan things that visitors remember for years.

Go fishing — fall is underrated

Most people don't realize the fishing is still excellent in fall. Late-season salmon and halibut are absolutely on the table, and the bay is quieter and more peaceful than peak summer.

Get out on the bay one last time

The bay is stunning in fall — the mountains are dusted with snow above the treeline while the water is still navigable. A late-season eco-tour with Tutka Tours or a water taxi across to the trails is something most visitors never think to do in fall, which makes it all the more special.

Relax and recharge

Explore Homer's art scene

Fall is genuinely one of the best times to experience Homer's creative community. The galleries along Pioneer Avenue are quieter, the artists are around, and First Friday art walks feel more intimate than in summer. Homer has a remarkable concentration of working artists — this is the season to slow down and actually talk to them.

Cozy dining in fall

Fall is soup season in Homer and the restaurants lean into it beautifully.

Cove & Co. — The red curry lentil soup with bread and butter is exactly what you want after a crisp fall hike. One of my businesses and one I'm genuinely proud of — warm, nourishing, and the matcha is exceptional.

Two Sisters Bakery — Hearty soups, fresh bread, and a cozy atmosphere that feels made for grey fall mornings.

The Twisted Goat — Warm, flavorful, and exactly the right vibe for a slow fall evening.

The Kannery — Seasonal dishes that reflect what's actually available locally. Beautiful cocktails and stunning bay views. Worth splurging on.

Finn's Pizza — Wood-fired pizza with bay views. A Homer classic any time of year.

Alice's Champagne Palace — Live music most weekends, relaxed atmosphere, great for families. An authentic Homer evening.

Where to stay

Our cozy oceanview retreat — Centrally located with breathtaking bay views, a fully equipped kitchen, and easy beach access. Fall is a beautiful time to stay here — the light through the windows in the morning is something else.

Lakeshore Lodging — Comfortable, warm, and genuinely welcoming. A Homer institution that takes good care of its guests.

Fall travel tips from a local

Pack layers that actually work. Fall mornings in Homer can be genuinely cold — 35–45°F — and afternoons can surprise you. A real fleece, a waterproof outer layer, and warm boots are non-negotiable.

Bring a camera and use it constantly. The fall light in Homer is extraordinary. Golden hour lasts for what feels like hours and the combination of fall color, snow on the mountains, and the bay is unlike anything else.

Embrace the quiet. Fall Homer is a completely different experience from summer Homer. The restaurants have their regulars back, the pace slows down, and the town feels like itself again. That's exactly the point.

Book fishing and bay tours in advance. Fall availability is better than summer but the best operators still fill up — especially for October trophy trout season on the rivers.

Fall events

The Homer Farmers Market runs through fall — check current dates as the season winds down. Live music at Alice's Champagne Palace continues through the shoulder season. Keep an eye on the Homer events calendar for what's happening during your visit.
